A man is lucky to be alive after brave police dragged him from a truck moments before it burst into flames.

Toll truck on fire after Mt Alexander Rd crash

Quick-thinking cops have saved a truck driver’s life after pulling the man from his burning truck in Essendon.

The Toll truck crashed into the Mt Alexander Rd bridge crushing a nearby car before erupting in flames about noon on Wednesday, July 28.

Victoria Police media officer Nikki Ladgrove said police managed to smash the 30-year-old truck’s window to pull the man to safety.

Ms Ladgrove said the driver of the SUV — a 56-year-old woman — witnessed the truck crash and was able to escape before her car was crushed.

Firefighters were called to the bridge, also near Fletcher St, to a Toll delivery semi-trailer in flames with smoke billowing but had the incident under control within 15 minutes.

Police have closed the road between Willow St and Grice Crescent.

Police Inspector Mark Nichols praised the “incredible” efforts of Moonee Ponds and Transit Safety officers, who smashed their way into the truck’s cabin to drag out the dazed driver.

“It’s the most proud moment… when members put their own lives at risk and this sort of stuff happens every day,” Insp Nichols said.

“So, for me, I’m very proud of our members I’m proud of the transit members that took action and they saved that gentleman’s life.”

It is believed the impact of the crash dislodged tram cables under the bridge and caused the truck to catch fire.

A Yarra Trams crew is on scene isolating power from downed lines before the truck can be hauled away.

A tow truck lifted the back of the truck while a separate tow truck pulled the car from under it.

An earlier transport alert cautioned transport users buses would replace trams on Route 59 and Route 82.

Emergency services have warned heavy smoke remains and people with respiratory issues should avoid the area if possible or close windows if inside.

Emergency services will remain on scene for some time.

Anyone who witnessed the collision or who has dashcam footage is urged to contact Crime Stoppers.
