A MELBOURNE variety store chain, which has franchises at Highpoint and other popular shopping precincts, has been slammed by the Federal Court for selling thousands of dangerous products posing choking hazards to children and other dangers.

A Consumer Affairs Victoria investigation revealed the Melbourne retailer, Origo & Co Pty Ltd, which operates the six Daiso stores around Melbourne, were selling more than 15,000 items that contravened Australian Consumer Law.

Toys, cosmetics, sunglasses, elastic luggage straps and more failed to comply with mandatory product safety and information standards due to incorrect and insufficient labels.

It’s believed the toys also posed a risk of facial injuries to children, with some toys for children aged under three found to pose a choking hazard.

According to new data released by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission this week, half of Australian homes contained unsafe products in 2017/18, with more than 4.5 million items recalled for safety reasons last financial year.

The Japanese dollar store sells cosmetics, stationery and kitchen utensils and other items for only $2.80.

Director of Consumer Affairs Victoria Simon Cohen said the outcome sent a clear message to traders.

“The onus is on traders to ensure the products they are selling or supplying meet mandatory requirements, ensuring consumers can buy products with confidence,” Mr Cohen said.

Origo was fined $355,000 by the Federal Court.

They have also been ordered to publish recall notices in each store, all Origo related websites and on the “daisoau” Instagram page.

The outcome follows the court’s decision to penalise Daiso Industries (Australia) Pty Ltd $1 million in December 2017, for selling unsafe products to consumers across the country.

The Leader has tried to contact the retailer but has received no response.
