A teenage girl remains in hospital with serious injuries after she was stabbed in Diggers Rest on Tuesday afternoon.
Cleaners arrived shortly after 10am on Wednesday to begin the grim task of removing the significant blood stains from the porch of one of the homes on the “quiet” suburban street in Melbourne’s outer north.
The girl, who is in her mid-teens, was flown to the Alfred Hospital Tuesday afternoon in dramatic scenes, where the ambulance helicopter landed on a small neighbourhood park near where the stabbing allegedly occurred.
Police arrested a boy in his mid-teens at the scene, and he remains in hospital with minor injuries.
Police confirmed the pair were known to one another.
“It’s shocking,” a neighbour to the crime scene, said.
“They’re a lovely family – our children sometimes play basketball and tennis together,” he said.
The neighbour told the Herald Sun he has lived in the street for three and a half years, and that nothing noteworthy had occurred in that time.
“I feel terrible for the father,” he said.
Another neighbour, speaking anonymously, described the family as “different” and reluctant to engage with the street – who they said were all good friends.
“They had only recently moved in,” the man said.
The street has been described as a quiet residential street by neighbours.
On Tuesday, local resident Ashley said she saw the helicopter arrive at the scene.
“It took about 30 minutes to get the (victim) into the ambulance,” she said.
“There was a lot of blood.”
Sue, who is 60 and has lived in the area for the past year, said it was surprising as “nothing ever happens here.”
The exact circumstances of the incident are unknown and the investigation is ongoing.
