Detectives still looking for woman who allegedly took $50 note from Strathmore Post Office

They copped plenty of heat from the public when they posted her face on Facebook earlier this year, but detectives are still trying to track down a woman who allegedly pocketed $50 she found on the floor of a post office in Strathmore.

Detectives are still trying to track down a woman who allegedly pocketed $50 she found on the floor of a post office in Strathmore last year.

Police confirmed to the Leader on Tuesday the investigation was still ongoing and no arrest had been made.

The incident caused a huge public uproar in February this year when Moonee Valley Crime Investigation Unit detectives took to Facebook to ask for help to identify a woman who they believe could assist with their inquiries.

Police deleted the post about 24 hours later but not before the photo had gathered almost 500 comments – mostly negative – as people took to social media to express their disbelief at the policing methods.

But police defended their actions and are still trying to identify the woman.

She is facing a maximum of 10 years in jail if convicted, according to the Crimes Act, but a sentence that severe would be highly unlikely.

Detectives said a man visited a post office in Napier St, Strathmore on December 19 and about 10.15am dropped a $50 note without noticing.

“A short time later a woman entered the post office and picked up the note and put it into her handbag,” police said.

A police spokeswoman said the woman could be facing a charge of theft.

“Under the Crimes Act if a person finds something and doesn’t take reasonable steps to find the owner, they commit an offence of theft by finding,” she said.

“We would urge this woman to contact her nearest police station and advise them of the steps, if any, she took to find the owner of the money.”

Anyone with information should contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
