DESIGN works on the Gap Rd and Horne St intersection upgrade in Sunbury are under way.
The notorious roundabout is a constant source of angst for Sunbury residents at morning and afternoon peaks due to its proximity to the town’s only level crossing at Station St.
Sunbury state Labor MP Josh Bull today announced that construction would start by the end of this year and is expected to be finished in late 2018.

SUNBURY ROUNDABOUT VOTED WORST INTERSECTION
Mr Bull said there were “few things more frustrating to drivers than being stuck in traffic and that’s why we’re working to fix this intersection”.
“This upgrade will improve traffic flow and make it safer and easier for people to move around Sunbury,” he said.
The $6.4 million upgrade will remove the existing roundabout and install traffic lights, and include additional and dedicated turning lanes, pedestrian-operated crossings and bicycle lanes.
Raised platforms will also be added on all approaches on Gap Rd and Horne St, which will slow traffic down.
The intersection carries about 21,500 vehicles per day on Horne St and 18,000 on Gap Rd, which is a key connecting route to Riddell Rd, Sunbury Rd and the Calder Freeway.
