A long-time firefighter who played a pivotal role in fighting the Black Saturday bushfires has been remembered for his dedication to the Craigieburn community.

David Reginato – also known as “Reggie” – passed away suddenly on August 25 but has been remembered as a caring man, who tried to help people around him.

Mr Reginato was part of the Craigieburn CFA from 2006 and served as a 3rd Lieutenant and junior brigade leader during his time with the organisation.

The Craigieburn CFA – which he was part of for over a decade – described the immense sadness his loss had brought them.

“David’s passing has left a massive hole in our hearts and we will remember him fondly – Rest in Peace Reggie!

“We send our deepest condolences to the Reginato family.”

Mr Reginato also gave time to other community positions including Ambulance Victoria as a Community Emergency Response Team member and trained with the Aircraft Rescue Fire Fighters.

“Reggie” completed 11 years of service with CERT, often completing shifts on Saturday nights and completed more than 500 shifts.

“From the outset, it became clear that David, or Reggie as he was affectionately known as, wanted to be the best he could be and learn as much as possible,” Cr Chris Hollow said.

“The position of lieutenant is a well-respected position of leadership within a brigade, David played a pivotal role in the 2007 Black Saturday bushfires and was one of the very first firefighters on the scene during that terrible day.

“David was a highly-respected and much-loved member of the CERT team and the Craigieburn CFA.”
