A father has made a terrifying citizen’s arrest after he allegedly found a stranger leaving his sleeping children’s bedroom, a court has heard.

Jordan Cook, 20, faced Broadmeadows Magistrates’ Court on June 23 charged with aggravated burglary after he allegedly broke into a young Dallas family’s home in the early hours of June 16.

Constable Mel Murdolo told the court Mr Cook was allegedly under the influence of alcohol and Xanax when he jumped the family’s backyard fence and climbed through a kitchen window about 1.20am.

Mr Cook allegedly wandered around the house and entered the children’s room before being confronted by their father as he exited, she told the court.

A scuffle allegedly ensued, resulting in the man tackling Mr Cook and pinning him to the ground until police arrived, Constable Murdolo told the court.

During an earlier bail hearing at the same court before Magistrate Tim Hoare last week, Mr Cook, who represented himself, told the court he was disoriented and believed he was at his grandmother’s house at the time of the alleged offence.

“Obviously I wasn’t in the right state of minds,” Mr Cook told the court.

“I didn’t hurt anyone, I wasn’t planning on stealing anything.”

He was denied bail but released today during a second bail hearing, this time represented by Legal Aid, before Magistrate Martin Grinberg.

Mr Grinberg bailed Mr Cook on the condition he engage with drug, alcohol and mental health support programs.

“He has numerous previous arrests, far too many for someone his age,” Mr Grinberg said.

“In his young life he’s at a cross roads as which way he’ll go.”

Mr Cook is due back at court for this matter in January.
