About 25 years after he first moved his business next to a flat empty space, Kon Paraskevakis is leading a green revolution through Coburg North.

The industrial electrical motor repair business owner took part in designs with Preston artist Hayden Dewar for a large mural on the wall of his business, Viacon.

The mural faces Sanger Reserve which, as part of the Merlynston Linear Park development, was created in 2015 by Moreland Council.

The development plans to link Fawkner Memorial Park with Hosken Reserve through one continuous park running above the traditional Merlynston Creek.

Mr Paraskevakis said he wanted to help create a welcoming space for families to relax, enjoy nature and consider the history of Coburg.

“It’s all about the stream, the area and the bluestone,” he said.

“I come outside and you see the kids using the basketball court and people enjoying the space and the birds are chirping.”

Mr Dewar said the mural, which had its cost split between the business and the council, was intended to include the natural and built environment around it.

It features bluestone rocks and watchtowers from Pentridge Prison, the old Kodak factory building and a Lincoln knitting mill silo alongside a rainbow lorikeet, endangered blue flax lilies and a grass frog.

“One of my own suggestions was the inclusion of the FC Holden as a reference to the strong history of automotive repair and industry in the local area,” Mr Dewar said.

“I’m glad this was included as it seems to have struck a chord with some of the older locals.”

The next stage for the park’s development is for the land between Tonkin and Rollo streets.

A draft plan is in the final stages of conclusion at the council.
