Coburg massage parlour declared illegal brothel and slapped with court order after police sting

A COBURG massage parlour has been declared an illegal brothel in court but the owners are fighting the charges, calling evidence gathered in a police investigation “ridiculous”.

Is your massage parlour actually a brothel

A COBURG massage parlour has been declared an illegal brothel following a police raid.

Sabai Massage on Sydney Rd was slapped with an order to desist by Broadmeadows Magistrates’ Court on May 4.

Sergeant Kylie Snart said Fawkner police had conducted an investigation into the venue, seizing liquor and “obtained evidence that showed illegal sex work” was done there.

Les Smith, the business owner’s husband, claimed the charge was “ridiculous” and the result of “vendettas” from either “jealous” rival parlours or disgruntled customers.

“We pride ourselves on not giving sexual services; every staff member has signed a contract saying they won’t give any sexual services,” Mr Smith said.

“We’ve got nothing to hide, we’ve got a good track record. We’ve engaged solicitors and we will fight this.”

Sabai Massage’s website states workers give the “best massage in town”, and includes multiple photos of women of different nationalities, “all bringing with them unique styles of massage”.

The massage parlour is still operating, but must display a notice until August 4, declaring that it’s an offence if any person is found on site engaging in any illegal activity.

The maximum penalty for such offences is one year in prison, or a $9500 fine.

“If they are there for a legitimate massage or to work there is no issue,” Sgt Snart said.

“It’s pretty much a warning to the employers and the employees and the customers as well.”

Sgt Snart said police would be undertaking regular patrols of the store and nearby areas and now reserved the right to enter the premises at any time.
