Hundreds of local jobs are coming to Craigieburn thanks to a retail giant’s decision to set up a nation-first operating hub.

Amazon has announced its intention to build an operation facility at the Amaroo Business Park that could lead to the creation of more than 200 jobs and 700 jobs during construction.

The facility is described by the retail giants as a sort centre, the first of its kind in Australia, which packages customers orders before they are distributed.

The centre, which will offer a range of employment opportunities from entry level to leadership roles, has been called a “commitment to the state” by the company’s head of Australia operations, Craig Fuller.

“We chose Melbourne as the first of our Australian fulfilment centres and have continued to invest significantly in Victoria,” Mr Fuller said.

“We know the past few years have been tough for Melburnians and we’re grateful to have had the opportunity to support our Victorian customers.”

Amazon has fulfilment centres in Dandenong South and Ravenhall as well as logistics sites in Tullamarine and Mulgrave.

Yuroke state Labor MP Ros Spence said the hub would give Craigieburn families access to better-quality employment options “closer to home,” a sentiment echoed by Victorian Treasurer Tim Pallas.

“Continued investments by international companies like Amazon sends strong signals that Victoria is open for business and is a strategic location to invest,” Mr Pallas said.

Mayor Carly Moore said it represented a “surge” of industrial development in Hume.

“This facility is the first of its kind for Amazon, which is also an exciting development for Hume,” Cr Moore said.

“This investment is the start of what we believe to be a huge surge in industrial development not only in Hume, but for the whole of Melbourne’s north.”

Ms Moore said the Craigieburn location was “ideal.”

“(Hume’s) closeness to the CB, Melbourne Airport, Port of Melbourne and access to the five major road connections make us an ideal location to attract new businesses.”
