A TOTAL of $20 million will be spent by the State Government on improving the safety of Melbourne-Lancefield Rd.
The notorious stretch has been identified as one of the top 20 high risk rural roads by the government.
There were 159 crashes along the 37km stretch of road, from Goonawarra to Lancefield, between June 2010 and June 2015.
State Roads Minister Luke Donnellan and Macedon state Labor MP Mary-Anne Thomas met VicRoads officials on the road in February and announced upgrades would be imminent.
The visit came after preliminary VicRoads community consultations seeking feedback as part of the government’s Towards Zero campaign attracted more than 800 comments.
Draft plans for the road upgrades are in the final design stages and will be unveiled by VicRoads for further community feedback.
The works are expected to start in September and be completed by October 2018.
