Nick Kyrgios: Victorians’ thoughts on Aussie tennis star ahead of Wimbledon final

He’s one win away from becoming the first Aussie male to win Wimbledon in 20 years. But are everyday Victorians in Nick Kyrgios’ corner?

Debate erupts over Nick Kyrgios’ place in Wimbledon final

He’s captured the world’s attention and horrified some tennis purists with his on-court antics in a remarkable, soap opera-filled Wimbledon campaign.

But after Rafael Nadal pulled out of their semi final clash due to injury on Friday morning, Aussie tennis star Nick Kyrgios now finds himself in his maiden grand slam final.

He has the opportunity to become the first Aussie male in 20 years to win the famous grand slam after Lleyton Hewitt triumphed at the All-England Club in 2002.

The win would also compliment his breakthrough doubles title with best mate Thanasi Kokkinakis at the Australian Open earlier this year.

The Canberra 27-year-old has polarised fans with his mix of on-court behaviour and talent.

Leader has spoken to readers from Boronia to Ballarat this week to see if they love or loathe Kyrigos, and if they think he’s good or bad for the sport.

See what they had to say, and let us know your thoughts in the comments section.

Gordon Mosinski from Albury shares his view on whether Nick Kyrgios is 'good' or 'bad' for sport.

“I think he’s very young, very immature. I think that in sport especially, there’s no place for that kind of aggression. It’s very poor sportsman behaviour.

“There’s a lot of young people coming through seeing that, idolising that, and as a bloke of old age I see society change over time and seeing this sort of thing happen I think is exacerbating the whole situation.

“I see it as a detriment not only to sport, but society as a whole because it’s not what we are about, especially as Australians in an egalitarian society.”

Mr Mosinski said he looks to Dylan Alcott instead as a role model in sport.

“I watch him and so admire what he does and who he is as a person.”

Greg Lavery, Ballarat

“I watched his game. I was hoping he’d lose against Sinner, and then I was disappointed to hear that Nadal’s pulled out with the abdomen problem.

“I don’t think he is (good for the game). I think it’s better as a gentleman’s sport, which he’s not.

“I don’t like watching him. I find it unpleasant to watch. It’s a shame he’s so damn good.”

“He is good for tennis but he’s got to calm down and just play tennis, and stop his antics.

“He’s a good tennis player when he puts his mind to it.

“I will be supporting him (in the Wimbledon final) as long as he plays tennis and doesn’t mess around.

“When he knows he’s not going to win, that’s when he starts throwing the games, and cracks it, he uses excuses when he knows he’s not going to get through, that’s what I think anyway.”

“I hope he wins it!”

“He’s a good player, but some of the things he does I don’t really like, including his attitude.

“Throwing around his racket doesn’t make him look good.

“There’s lots of theories about if he would be any better if he pulled his head in, and I reckon he would be if he did.”
