IT was a case of sit up straight and back down again for high school students attempting to break a Guinness World Record at Newport Athletics Track last week.

More than 700 Williamstown High School students did sit ups simultaneously for one minute to break the world record of 414 people held by a US town and set just last month.

School principal Gino Catalano said the school community felt confident it had broken the present record.

“The event was fantastic with all the students and teachers sitting down in the centre of the oval,” he said.

“So we are now sending photographs and video footage to Guinness World Records for verification.”

The school made the record attempt as part of its centenary celebrations.
