A FOOTSCRAY intersection has clocked one of the highest rates in the state for nabbing drivers speeding and running red lights, new data shows.

A mobile camera in Ballarat Rd, Footscray, came in at 40th, with 5838 fines.

The corner of Ballarat Rd and Ashley St, Maidstone saw 3363 issued; corner of Francis St and Wembley Ave, Yarraville, 3261 fines; and the intersection of Gordon St and Barkly St, Footscray, 1055 fines.

Westgate Highway Patrol Senior Sergeant Keith Kissack said the cameras were a deterrent, forcing drivers to slow down.

“In Maribyrnong driver behaviour has a definite impact on collisions, particularly with our pedestrians,” he said.

“We have pedestrians being struck by people who are travelling too fast or who are ignoring the road laws.

“Everyone needs to slow down and obey the road laws, traffic lights are put there for a reason and the laws are there for everyone to be safe.”

Overall, more than 1.3 million fines were issued on Victorian roads, racking up more than $338 million.

The notorious Chadstone junction was the worst over the 12-month period, with 35,075 fines issued, followed by the intersection of Fitzroy St and Lakeside Drive, St Kilda with 32,302 fines.

The majority of speeding fines across the board — 867,685 — were for motorists travelling at less than 10km/h over the speed limit, but there were also almost 1000 drivers caught exceeding the limit by more than 45km/h.

Department of Justice and Regulation spokeswoman Ashleigh Brown said the cameras played an important role in reducing road trauma.

“We understand no one likes getting a fine and we’d prefer it if no one did because it would mean they weren’t risking lives by speeding or running red lights,” Ms Brown said.
