Berwick teacher death: students post tributes to Satya Nadan who died in front of staff and students

PAST and current Berwick College students have paid tribute to a veteran maths and science teacher who tragically died in front of staff and students yesterday.

PAST and current students and parents have taken to social media to pay tribute to a much-loved teacher who tragically died at school yesterday afternoon.

Satya Nadan, a Berwick College staff member for more than 17 years, died after collapsing at the Manuka Rd school.

The 60-year-old was a popular senior mathematics and physics teacher and had moved to Melbourne in 1990 from Labasa College in Fiji.

The father of two had been married to his college sweetheart for more than 25 years.

An ex-student posted to Facebook that he was a “lovely man” while others offered their support to shocked staff and students who witnessed the tragic event.

One parent said their son was “devastated and shaken” after witnessing the teacher collapse.

Another parent said Mr Nadan was “a wonderful, thoughtful teacher … thanks for being a great teacher to my son”.

A current student posted that Mr Nadan was “one of the greatest teachers I’ll ever have, rest in peace” while another said he was “such a wonderful, happy man and such a support to many people. You will always be missed.”

Another former student posted to say he was “very sad to hear of the passing of one of the nicest, patient and most understanding teachers I ever had at school”.

In a letter realeased to the school community, principal Kerri Bolch said their thoughts were with Mr Nadan’s family and friends during this difficult time.

Ms Bolch said assemblies were held this afternoon to inform students of the tragic passing of Mr Nadan.

“We have passed on our condolences to the family and will do all we can to support them,” she said.

Ms Bolch said every effort will be made to support students at the school.

“Teachers, wellbeing team and Education Department counsellors are available at the school to talk with any students that need additional support,” she said.

“We are grateful to our school community for the way they care and support each other.”

Ms Bolch urged parents to contact the school if their children were to be absent or needed further support.

Emergency services were called to Berwick College yesterday after reports a man had died.

A post on the Pakenham Crime & Theft Facebook page said the teacher suffered a seizure and a heart attack in front of shocked students.

Police said the exact circumstances surrounding his death are yet to be established but it is not being treated as suspicious.
