With National Doughnut Day falling on June 1 this year, you can trade the first day of winter frost for frosting of a different kind.
While the yearly event started in the US, this celebration of sugar has made its way over to our shores, and we’ve rounded up some of the Melbourne spots where you’ll score a free sweet fix today.

MACCA’S RELEASING BIG MAC SAUCE
DANDEE DONUTS
The Dandee Donuts van will dish out their trademark hot jam doughnuts at Dandenong Market. Free from 8am-4pm or while stocks last, limited to one per person. To cope with demand there will be two doughnut vans operating on the day.
Owner Susan Bell said the business handed out 4000 freebies in 2017. “We sold another 4000 as well so it was a pretty busy day,” she said.
KRISPY KREME
Globall doughnut dynamo Krispy Kreme will give away 50,000 original glazed doughnuts nationwide including Melbourne outlets in Collins St and Swanston St in the CBD, Fountain Gate, Bulleen, Fawkner and at Tullamarine Airport terminals Qantas T1, Virgin T3 and T4. Limit of one per person, offer until stocks last.
BISTRO MORGAN
Pastry wunderkind Morgan Hipworth’s success story keeps getting sweeter. The 17-year-old’s Windsor bakery will give away a free mini doughnut with every six-pack of doughnuts purchased. The deal includes delivery orders. At 190 High St Windsor.
GOLDELUCK’S DOUGHNUTS
Goldeluck’s Doughnuts at Level 2, Eastland, is going all-out. They have already named new flavours each day this week — including Snickers with injectable caramel sauce. To celebrate the day of the doughnut, the bakery has teamed up with DC Coffee to offer a free doughnut or dossant (a doughnut/croissant hybrid) to the first 50 customers who order a coffee from 9am onwards. The store will also be giving away doughnuts or dossant to the first 100 people in line from 6.30pm. Be one of the first people in line and you could receive a nine or four doughnut pack.
SHORTSTOP COFFEE & DONUTS
This popular doughnut stop at 12 Sutherland St, Melbourne CBD, will be giving away 700 classic cinnamon cake doughnuts. One per transaction, while stocks last and are not for individual sale.
OASIS BAKERY
Sweet tooths have their pick of either a jam or Nutella doughnut from Oasis, with the Murrumbeena business aiming to give 10,000 doughnuts away. As with the all other deals going around — doughnuts are limited to one per person. At 9/993 North Rd.
REBEL DONUTS
Newcomer Rebel Donuts will join the celebrations by giving away 500 free cinnamon doughnuts from their 968A Nepean Hwy Mornington outlet.
DOUGHBOYS
These bad boys may not be free but the new lamington doughnuts come with the sweet taste of the moral high ground. Proceeds from all Doughnut Day sales will support the Koala Kids Foundation, which helps children with cancer. At 535 Bourke St, Melbourne.
PONTOON
This beachside eatery, 30 Jacka Boulevard, St Kilda, is giving away free doughnuts from noon.
LUKUMADES
This purveyor of hand-crafted Greek doughnuts is getting in on the action. They will be giving away free mini packs with the first 100 orders from noon. At 83 Peel St West Melbourne.
LEVAIN DOUGHNUTS
Sourdough doughnut maker Anthony Randello-Jahn started his wholesale business Levain Doughnuts in Moorabbin a year ago. “We bake from scratch and use only premium ingredients,” he said. “Recently we made green doughnuts for a lady having an avocado party. We’re also getting orders for doughnut walls which is the latest trend at events.”
The first 50 customers at Chameleon Junction at 4/4-6 Station St will receive a free Levain doughnut.
RUSTICA
The Fitzroy eatery is offering four new limited-edition flavours to celebrate the day which are based on the seasons. The winter doughnut is a dark chocolate-coated creation filled with coconut and vanilla crème topped with a marshmallow. The spring-inspired flavour oozes rose crème and raspberry gel and topped with freeze-dried lychee. There’s a pina colada flavour for summer and a vanilla pecan one for autumn. They will cost $4.50 each but a four-pack can be bought for $16. At 402 Brunswick St.
