Melbourne petrol prices expected to drop until Christmas, Truganina cheapest to fill up

Santa is coming early to Melbourne, with petrol prices falling as we head into Christmas holidays. And there’s one suburb where it has dropped below $1.20 a litre.

Santa is coming early to Melburnians feeling the cost of Christmas, bringing cheaper petrol prices than have been seen in recent months — and they’re expected to keep dropping.

Drivers are being advised to hold off filling up their tanks for upcoming Christmas travel, with price comparison experts saying prices will get even better than today’s average Melbourne price of 129.8c a litre.

Comparethemarket.com.au’s savings expert Abigail Koch said drivers should be relieved Melbourne petrol prices had already peaked this price cycle, back on December 7.

“Prices should continue to ease into the holiday season,” she said.

“Crude oil prices have dropped from record highs in October, which is welcome news for all motorists heading on a Christmas road trip.”

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission is also encouraging drivers to delay getting petrol, saying the drop in prices is likely to continue.

But for drivers who can’t put off filling up, comparethemarket.com.au has revealed that the cheapest place to get unleaded petrol in Melbourne right now is Truganina, where it can be found for 119.9c a litre.

The data comparison website is also warning motorists Healesville is the most expensive Melbourne suburb for petrol right now, where people are paying 139.4c a litre.

Melbourne’s petrol price relief comes just months after drivers angrily boycotted service stations to protest record-high prices, which reached a top of 167.3c a litre in Melbourne.

Melbourne’s petrol prices were the most expensive in Australia behind Canberra from September 17 to December 16, averaging 148.1c a litre, according to comparethemarket.com.au’s analysis.

The best place to fill up during the tough time was Altona and Williamstown, where prices were around 145.3c a litre, while petrol stations in the city and South Melbourne were the worst, slugging drivers 150c a litre.
