BULLEEN

An innocent driver was taken to hospital and five cars damaged when a driver failed to obey a stop sign about 1.25pm on March 16. A 34-year-old Springvale South man was leaving a carpark on Bulleen Rd, near the Eastern Freeway intersection, when his Renault collided with a Holden Commodore being driven by a 25-year-old man from Ferntree Gully. The Commodore careered into three other cars with one driver, a 52-year-old from Balwyn, treated for minor injuries. Nunawading highway patrol Sergeant Paul Egan said the Springvale South driver was fined for failing to give way to a stop sign.

WARRANDYTE

A Warrandyte North man will receive a summons to attend court and had his car impounded after returning a breath test reading of 0.157 following a smash in Warrandyte last Wednesday night. According to a post on the Eyewatch — Manningham Police Service Area Facebook page the 36-year-old allegedly failed to give way to another driver at the intersection of Yarra St and Mitchell Ave about 8pm. It’s also alleged he reversed into a stationary car while attempting to pull over. It’s understood he told police he was driving to get a pizza for dinner. His licence was immediately suspended and his car will be locked up for 30 days.

DONVALE

A teenage driver was treated for shock after failing to give way at a Donvale intersection and smashing into a car being driven by a man with two children on board. The 19-year-old, from Panton Hill, was turning right from Tindals Rd into Reynolds Rd about 4.49pm on March 17 when his Subaru Impreza collided with a Mitsubishi Triton ute being driven by a 40-year-old man from Croydon South. The driver of the ute and his passengers, a three-year-old girl and a five-year-old boy, were not hurt. The Impreza driver was treated for shock at Box Hill Hospital and was fined for failing to give way. Nunawading highway patrol Sergeant Paul Egan said police considered the intersection a hotspot. “It’s always a difficult one for people to negotiate, getting around that bend,” he said. Sgt Egan said it was also in a semirural area where drivers were sometimes prone to losing concentration. “Don’t be complacent about driving in less busy roads,” he said.

WONGA PARK

Just inches separated a relatively minor car accident from likely tragedy in Wonga Park. A 78-year-old Lilydale man driving a Honda sedan drifted across double white lines on Jumping Creek Rd about 4.35pm on March 18, sideswiping a Mazda 3 coming the other way. Both cars were totalled but only the Mazda driver, a 54-year-old woman from Templestowe who sustained minor injuries, required medical attention. The Honda driver, who had a 76-year-old Lilydale woman in the passenger seat, was fined. Nunawading highway patrol Sergeant Paul Egan said: “This is one that could have been tragedy, at that sort of speed a sideswipe to a full head-on is only a matter of inches.”

Officers pulled over 80 motorbikes in a three-day operation targeting dodgy riders on freeways across Melbourne. Operation Acer ran from March 13 to 16 with solo officers targeting hotpots including the Eastern Freeway outbound at Doncaster. They intercepted 80 motorcyclists. Fifty-four were ticketed for lane-filtering offences, seven for having non-compliant helmets, seven for having unroadworthy motorbikes and five riders for failing to comply with licence restrictions. Three riders were allegedly found to be drug-driving, while three bikes were impounded.
