Cute, funny or weird? Melbourne’s best street and building sign gaffes

Spelling mistakes, typos, hilarious quips — Melbourne is known to many as the world’s most liveable city, but here’s why we should also claim the ‘quirkiest street signs’ title.

Sometimes signs just don’t say what they’re supposed to.

From epic fails to double entendres, here are some examples of street and building signs around Melbourne which leave motorists and passers-by amused, puzzled or both.

Party ice sold here

Is there a secret wild side to Melbourne’s conservative inner-east?

Home to some of the state’s top private schools and posh pooches that strut the lush nature strips with haircuts more expensive than some humans — maybe they do let their hair down after all.

This sign on a grocery store in Kew East leads us to believe so — that it’s Kew-l to have a wild night … and day … and night …

Oops...Monash Freeway, Notting Hill.

It’s Glen WaverLEY

VicRoads had one job — and that was to spell Glen Waverley correctly on a sign read by thousands of freeway commuters daily.

Instead, motorists were left amused and snapping sneaky pics of the typo on a sign at the Monash Fwy’s popular Springvale Rd exit in May this year.

VicRoads eventually amended the sign, but peeved Glen Waverley locals all-too-familiar with the mistake be like … *slow clap*.

Grylls St, Brunswick.

Bear Grylls

He’s eaten goats’ testicles, reindeers’ eyeballs, maggots and even squeezed a brown liquid out of an elephant’s poo and consumed that.

Bear Grylls’ wild reality-TV adventures have caused some to question if the daring British producer and actor is man, or mad?

Well, Brunswick seems to be mad about him.

Someone has even hung a teddy bear beside the Grylls St sign in his honour.

A step too fur?

Russell St, Melbourne CBD.

This means Little Greece

Not so much funny, but more on the cryptic side.

How many of you city dwellers have spotted this beneath the Russell St sign?

Apparently the Tetris-serpent like sign notes Little Greece and points people toward the Greek food and cultural hub of Melbourne.

Anyone fancy a souva?

No right turn into Marriage Rd

Some might see this sign off the Nepean Hwy coming into Brighton from the CBD and think they just can’t turn right.

But if you’re trapped in an unsettling marriage — then you might read between the lines on this one and chuckle … or cry.

Ice HQ

We think the creators of this sign in Reservoir are skating on thin ice with this one. But we shouldn’t give them the cold shoulder, it’s quite easy for this one to slip the mind of passers by or leave them shivering with glee.
