A MOTORIST has been branded “the luckiest man alive” after he smashed into a fence on the opposite side of Canterbury Rd near Heathmont this afternoon.
Police remain on site directing traffic during the busy peak hour.
According to eyewitness reports, the man was travelling towards Heathmont when his car suddenly travelled over the nature strip at 3.30pm.
It is believed the man’s car went across three lanes of traffic and smashed into a fence above train tracks, a short distance from Heathmont Village shopping centre.
Heathmont’s John Cull was at nearby Barclay’s Café and heard the crash.
Mr Cull said there were “police officers everywhere” and said it appeared the male driver was under police supervision,
“It’s a miracle there wasn’t traffic coming the other way,” Mr Cull said.
“That guy is the luckiest guy alive,” he said.
Heathmont Flowers owner Helen Brown said traffic was “horrendous” outside the shopping centre.
Victoria Police have been contacted for comment.
