STUCK for somewhere to go for a casual weekend tipple? There is no shortage of wine-soaked watering holes in Melbourne’s west. Here’s our guide to 14 of the best west-side vinotecas.
Best wine bars in the west
315 Victoria St, West Melbourne
Read a book, play a board game or feast on charcuterie at this lovely library-inspired wine bar in Melbourne’s inner west. The wine selection is epic, and the wine list even has a dedicated section for chilled reds. Winning. Try: Some chilled Rebel Rebel Montepulciano from McLaren Vale in South Australia.
11 Anderson St, Yarraville
From wine tastings to rotating dinner specials (BBQ lamb chops, anyone?) and what has been dubbed by some Zomato users the ”best charcuterie ever” — this atmospheric Anderson St stalwart is the ideal spot for a chilled out Sunday sesh.
106 Nicholson St, Footscray
With more than 25 taps (hint: one of them is espresso martini), more than 430 beers and a bewilderingly impressive selection of wines and spirits, this laid-back local is a serious gem. Housed in a converted $2 shop, the two-storey bottle shop-come-bar oozes cool.
295 Barkly St, Footscray
There’s something for everyone at Bar Joesphine. As well as a wine list that favours quality over quantity, there is also a rotating selection of craft beer and a few cocktails thrown in for good measure.
3/154 Barkly St, Footscray
Good things come in small, er, spaces. For all your French favourites — that goes for both food and wine — this lovely local brasserie is a go-to. Start with some fromage, then dig into a big bowl of bouillabaisse (basically a fish stew) and then finish on a creme brulee. Oh, and then there’s the wine, of course. A pinot blanc from Alsace? Don’t mind if we do.
228 Nicholson St, Footscray
A wine bar with a sunny courtyard and a community spirit, where you can relax with a wine in hand eating delicious Ethiopian food or burgers from neighbouring businesses.
2/88 Hudsons Rd, Spotswood
If you don’t mind eating cheese, pickles and grilled peppers or artichokes for dinner (#drool) — this is the wine bar for you. Try: A glass of Amherst Lachlan’s Chardonnay from the Pyrenees in Vic.
2/101 Victoria St, Seddon
It might have only 20 seats, but this small wine store packs a big punch. With more that 500 boutique wines on offer (you can take away or sip in store), as well as a good selection of craft beers and local spirits — it’s like a wine lover’s paradise.
83/73 Douglas Parade, Williamstown
The food and the wine are en pointe at this west side wine bar. Because what’s a glass of top-notch vino without some Serrano Jamon or San Daniele Prosciuto with which to enjoy it. There is also a fine selection of cheeses, grazing plates and sweet treats on offer. Try: A glass of Wild’s Gully Tempranillo from the King Valley.
2/419 Gordon St, Maribyrnong
Looking for a special occasion venue? Well, here it is. Melbourne really is the foodie capital (albeit self-proclaimed) of Australia and, as custodians of this fine city, we find comfort in knowing we’re never far from a fine feast or boutique glug of vino. Try: Carlei Estate Tre Bianchi made with grapes from the Tamar (Tas) and Yarra valleys.
K Rd, Werribee
If you love your wine, why not get it straight from the horse’s mouth. Or, in this case, the Shadowfax cellar door. Not only is Shadowfax one of the closest wineries to Melbourne, it also produces some seriously high-quality drops. And it’s named was inspired by J.R.R. Tolkien’s classic The Lord of the Rings novel, in which Shadowfax was chief among horses — which is about as cool as it gets when it comes to winery names. Try: Their pinot noir bold and peppery and goes down a treat.
12 Watton St, Werribee
OK, so it might be more about the beet (there are 23 rotating taps) at this Werribee watering hole, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t a great selection of small-batch wines on offer, too. Try: A glass of HãHã Pinot Gris from Hawkes Bay in New Zealand. It’s not only delicious — but fun to order, too.
Pacific Werribee, Corner Derrimut Road And Heaths Road, Hoppers Crossing
This trendy all-day eatery and bar is the ideal spot for a casual cocktail — the list is exceptional — or vino. With a lively vibe, decent drinks list and plenty of food — you’ve got all bases covered.
Main Street & Murnong Street, Stocklands Point Cook
All-you-can-eat tapas for $35, live music, wine. What more could you want in life?
