An elderly sex pest who forcibly kissed a teenage girl has been freed into the community, despite being “reluctant” to accept what he did was wrong.
Nady Hanna, 72, was convicted of the sexual assault of a child and sentenced at the Melbourne Magistrates Court on June 15 to a 12 month corrections order, after a disturbing incident at North Melbourne train station last year.
Hanna approached a young girl he didn’t know in the middle of the afternoon while she was waiting for a train.
After a short conversation, the grandpa pulled the girl into a hug, pulled her face mask down and kissed her on the lips, causing her to push him away and run from him to board an incoming train.
The Egyptian man followed the girl inside the train where she tried to escape and was “visibly and audibly upset”.
CCTV footage of the incident showed the old man walking off the train with his “head in his hands”.
When he was arrested on March 3 at a sports centre in St Albans he vehemently denied hugging or kissing the teen, saying: “I don’t know why she’s upset”.
“I’m sorry I did the wrong thing. I’m old,” he said.
According to court documents, the victim was left “emotionally traumatised” as a result of the incident.
The prosecutor said Hanna initially denied committing the offence and “minimised and justified his actions”.
“There is some reluctance for him to accept how wrong what he did was,” they said.
Hanna previously faced court after he kissed a woman in the elevator of an office building, when he was fined but escaped conviction.
His defence lawyer told the court he was “feeling overwhelmed by the circumstances that he has put himself in”.
“He plainly appreciates that it's serious, that’s been backed up by his emotional response on multiple occasions.
“He was highly emotional after the incident.”
Hanna was convicted and ordered to pay a $1000 fine, as well as engage in psychological counselling.
