More than 20,000 people are expected to fill the streets of Point Cook this Saturday as part of a multicultural celebration.

The Wyndham Multicultural Lunar Festival will return for the seventh year to Stockland Point Cook, with this weekend’s edition to feature more cultures and backgrounds than ever before.

According to the 2021 census, Point Cook is Australia’s multicultural suburb, with 86 different countries represented, with neighbouring suburbs Tarneit and Werribee the next highest with 79 countries.

Seventy per cent of Point Cook residents also have both parents born overseas.

Point Cook Cultural Committee president Bob Fairclough said it was these statistics and community feedback which inspired the committee to include “as many cultural groups as possible” for the event.

“The comments from the community is that they wanted to broaden the scope so we’re making it multicultural celebration,” he said.

“We’re one of the most multicultural communities in Australia right now. There’s a big range of backgrounds that have come and call Point Cook home.

“It’s a really important event because it’s a great chance for people who may have just moved to the suburb and even the country to integrate into their new communities and meet people.

“One of the other aims we’ve got is to assist our local artists. They’re not all professional a lot are members of the local artist groups and this gives them a great opportunity to show us what they’re capable of.

“The other attraction, of course, is the amount of food available from the different cuisines.”

Performances and cuisines from India, Africa, Sri Lanka, Brazil and Fiji will be on show, while 80 performances are scheduled throughout the day, which kicks off at 11am with the vibrant dragon dance.
