Monash Health: WorkSafe Victoria charges health service over death

Monash Health will face court after being charged over a patient's death. See why WorkSafe Victoria took the step.

A Melbourne health service has been charged for allegedly exposing a patient to health and safety risks while in its care.

Monash Health has been charged by WorkSafe Victoria after a patient took their own life while undergoing treatment in the acute mental health unit at Casey Hospital in Berwick in 2015.

After conducting an investigation, WorkSafe Victoria charged Monash Health under the Occupational Health and Safety Act.

The matter will be heard at Melbourne Magistrates‘ Court on February 2, 2023.

Recent data showed 56 deaths were recorded in the workplace by December 21 last year across the state.

One of the biggest rises in workplace-related incidents was mental health. which has increased especially in the last three years according to WorkSafe data.

“The death of this patient is an absolute tragedy, and our thoughts and deepest condolences are with the family,” a Monash Health spokesperson said.

“As this matter is before the courts, Monash Health is unable to comment further at this time.”
