Travis Beasley: Man filmed female employee in Thurla Farm work bathroom

A man who secretly filmed a female colleague in a work bathroom over seven weeks near Mildura has argued he shouldn’t get jail time because he’s already been publicly shamed.

Travis Beasley, 41, pleaded guilty to three charges, including stalking and using an optical surveillance device to record a private activity.

A 41-year-old man secretly filmed a female employee in a workplace bathroom, a court has heard.

Travis Beasley, 41, pleaded guilty to three charges, including stalking, visually capturing a genital region and using an optical surveillance device to record a private activity, at Mildura Magistrates’ Court.

Beasley was employed at Thurla Farms in Koorlong, near Mildura, at the time of the offending.

Police alleged that on April 16 a motion-activated surveillance device was found in the bathroom of the main office building at the farm, hidden in an exhaust vent, with a hole cut to allow the camera a view of the toilet.

Files on a micro SD card contained in the device were timestamped between February 7 and April 16.

Police found 45 files containing footage of Beasley, including him installing the camera in the ceiling fan and then maintaining the device under the bathroom sink.

Beasley’s iPhone was later seized, with police locating 129 files displaying the female victim obtained from the surveillance device.

This included media taken of her in the office focusing on her breasts and legs.

Another 10 files were found of another woman, who was filmed in a shower.

Beasley’s laptop was also seized, where 79 video files of the victim were found.

In a Dropbox folder named “diabetes”, there were another 10 videos, including versions which had been edited to show close-up footage.

Beasley’s lawyer sought for his client to be placed on a community corrections order instead of receiving jail time.

The lawyer argued that the “public shame” of Beasley being named in a newspaper after an earlier court appearance on the matters was significant punishment in itself.

Magistrate Michael Coghlan said the offending involved a fair degree of planning and took place over seven weeks.

Mr Coghlan said the reporting of court cases by media was perhaps a benefit of living in a country town.

On the charges of stalking and capturing a genital region, Beasley was sentenced to three months imprisonment.

On the device charge, he was sentenced to a community corrections order with conditions on ongoing treatment, a mental health assessment and participation in programs.

Beasley’s lawyer said the sentence would be appealed.

Beasley was granted bail on the condition he not communicate with witnesses, possess surveillance devices or attend Thurla Farms.
