Mildura’s new $5 million service station is set to be unveiled to the public on Thursday.

South Australian convenience chain OTR said the project took 10 months to build, with some unavoidable delays due to COVID-19 and border closures.

The 24-hour outlet also includes Mexican restaurant Guzman y Gomez and was said to create employment for 55 people.

Finishing touches on the development, at the busy intersection of Fifteenth St and Deakin Ave, were completed on Wednesday.

At its tallest point, the building’s ceiling is 6.7m high.

OTR head of community, partnerships and PR Joann Skene said planning started four years ago.

“The location was certainly thought about as being a gateway to Mildura and we wanted to build an iconic store that’s beautiful to look at aesthetically and from a design perspective,” Ms Skene said.

OTR is South Australia’s biggest private employer.

The new “flagship” Mildura store is the second Sunraysia OTR, after Irymple opened in 2015.

Expansion into western Victoria has also included two Horsham stores, plus outlets in Portland and Stawell.

Ms Skene said OTR were looking at other Victorian locations, including central Melbourne, as well as other states.

Tacos and bowls were being offered for $5 on opening day.

Guzman y Gomez founder and chief executive Steven Marks said the new outlet would serve the Mildura community “affordable and authentic Mexican taste”.

“We’re so excited to be opening a store in the beautiful city of Mildura,” Mr Marks said.

“We’ve seen growing demand from our customers in regional communities, including the northern region of Victoria.

“Mildura made sense for us, being one of the largest cities in northwest Victoria and we’ll be in the bustling town centre just off Mildura Central.”
