A man walking the streets of Mildura after being kicked out of a pub put another person in hospital with a one-punch attack.

Mildura man Nichols Robertson, 26, pleaded guilty at the Mildura Magistrates’ Court to intentionally causing injury and committing an indictable offence on bail.

According to a police summary tabled in court, on April 2 at about 10pm, Robertson attended the Gateway Tavern in Mildura.

Court documents revealed Robertson consumed four Jack Daniel’s drinks before he, and another person, were ejected for being drunk.

The pair then walked along San Mateo Ave towards Fourteenth St.

The court heard the victim, who also had been drinking, had left his house in search of his dog, which had escaped from his backyard.

As the pair who had left the pub walked towards the victim, the man told the pair to “f--- off”.

A push and shove ensued between the trio.

The court heard Robertson used a closed fist to punch the victim on the left side of his face, who fell back and struck his head on a concrete footpath.

This was said to have left him immediately unconscious.

The summary said both Robertson and the person with him failed to render any assistance and were heard saying, “did you see him hit the ground, it had to happen”, as they walked away.

The victim was transported to Mildura Base Hospital, where he stayed overnight, and received bruising, swelling and lacerations to his head and face.

Robertson’s lawyer said his client initially sought to contest the charges on self-defence grounds but pleaded guilty after receiving a sentencing indication from Magistrate Michael Coghlan.

Robertson was sentenced to a total of four months in prison, three for intentionally causing injury and one for committing an indictable offence on bail.
