A Mildura meth head left a woman bruised and traumatised after bashing her and spitting in her face, a court has heard.

Justin Smith, 34, appeared in Mildura Magistrates’ Court, pleading guilty to multiple charges, including recklessly causing injury. He was also re-sentenced for common law assault after breaching a previous bond through this offending.

The court heard that in September last year, Smith pushed, punched, slapped, and spat on a woman, leaving her with bruises on her face, arms, and legs.

Smith also verbally assaulted the victim, calling her a “mutt” and “a little slut” while he attacked her.

Smith scoffed and shook his head aggressively when it was revealed he spat in her face and slapped the victim.

It was revealed that his offending breached a bond for a previous incident in which he assaulted a pregnant woman while high on methamphetamine, grabbing her throat, choking her, and spitting on her.

The victim of the September incident read out a powerful Victim Impact Statement through tears, saying the attack left her with trauma and fear that she has to cope with every day and spoke about how she was genuinely in fear for her life.

Smith’s lawyer, Jamie McConnachie, told the court that her client was now drug free, asking for a financial penalty instead of jail time. She described him as a working man trying to rebuild his life.

Magistrate Michael Coghlan said offending like Smith’s was a plague on the Mildura community.

Magistrate Michael Coghlan condemned the offending, saying the community needed protection.

“(This type of offending) is an absolute plague in this community. It causes enormous harm,” Mr Coghlan said.

“I do not intend to deal with this matter by way of a fine. There needs to be a clear message sent to you … and the community.”

Mr Coghlan said had Smith not pleaded guilty, he would have received a six-month jail sentence.

Smith was sentenced to four months behind bars and fined $2000.
