A homeless Mildura methhead has been accused of kidnapping a woman after a seemingly innocent breakfast at Hungry Jacks, a court has heard.
Jade Fell fronted Mildura Magistrates’ Court seeking bail on charges including kidnapping and driving unlicensed
Mr Fell is accused of taking his alleged victim to a remote area near the Murray River, where he allegedly prevented her from leaving the vehicle.
The court heard a witness passing on a motorbike reported seeing a woman jump from a car, screaming for help.
According to police, Mr Fell told the witness the woman was experiencing a mental health episode.
However, the witness told police he urged Mr Fell to call triple-0, saying he should seek mental health assistance if she was in distress, the court heard.
Police claimed Mr Fell, who admitted to a daily methamphetamine habit of 2.5g, tried to silence the woman by covering her mouth and pinning her down.
The witness allegedly made several attempts to free the woman, including reaching to remove the keys from the ignition.
Police allege Mr Fell drove off at speed with the car door open, causing the witness to fall.
In support of her son’s bail application, Mr Fell’s mother testified she would contact the police if her son breached any bail conditions.
“He did well when he came to live with me in Shepparton. He got off the drugs, got a job, everything,” she told the court.
Magistrate Patrick Southey, however, denied the application, recommending he seek a place in a rehabilitation facility.
“(Considering) his drug use, the fact he is not doing well on a CCO. No wonder his mental health is poor if he is using that much meth every day,” Mr Southey said.
“Last but not least, he has a really, really serious criminal history. Bail is refused, Mr Fell,” Mr Southey said.
Mr Fell is scheduled to appear next on January 29 at Mildura Magistrates’ Court.
