A boozy afternoon ended in a family bust-up for a young Mildura man who drove his partner’s car through his parent’s front fence and assaulted his stepdad.
Brendon Giles, 21, pleaded guilty in Mildura Magistrates’ Court on October 4 to multiple charges including driving in a dangerous manner while intoxicated and assault.
The court heard that in February, Giles drove his girlfriend’s car out of his parent’s driveway while extremely intoxicated, hitting the letterbox and causing “significant” damage to a brick fence.
Giles then continued to drive down the street with his partner in the passenger seat begging him to pull over before he eventually stopped the car.
His partner got out and tried to call Giles’ parents on her phone, before Giles grabbed it and threw it on the ground, damaging the screen, before pushing his partner to the ground.
The pair returned to Giles’ parent’s home, where arguing continued between a drunk Giles and his stepfather.
The two men came to blows, before Giles picked up a metal tyre iron and tried to hit his stepfather.
His mother and girlfriend intervened and became involved in the scuffle as Giles continued to try to assault his stepfather.
Both his parents’ sustained significant cuts from the altercation, and his mother had a chunk of hair ripped out.
Police were called and then breath tested Giles, who returned a reading of 0.19.
The court heard Giles had told police in a later interview that he “didn’t remember anything from that night”, due to his level of intoxication.
On Wednesday, the court heard Giles had quit drinking and smoking since the incident and had made significant efforts to turn his life around.
Magistrate Patrick Southey said while most people had done stupid while intoxicated “not many of us commit offences of this scale,”.
Giles was disqualified from driving for 25 months, fined $800 and convicted.
