An armed man who allegedly tried to rob a victim of $24,000 in cash before his co-accused allegedly fatally stabbed the victim has been denied bail.

Lynkon Thorpe, 21, this week fronted court to apply for bail, after being remanded in custody over the incident last year.

Police allege that on May 21 Thorpe was armed with a sawn-off shotgun when he went to a Mildura home with a co-accused to demand his victim hand over the wads of cash he had seen him showing off earlier.

His co-accused, Blake Cardy, then entered the room. He and the victim then had an altercation which ultimately ended in the victim’s stabbing death.

Thorpe is not charged over the death.

After giving a detailed account of the incident, Senior Constable Herbert this week made the case that the court would be setting Thorpe “up to fail” if he were granted bail.

“If the court were to grant him bail, there would need to be non-association orders with all of the witnesses, which is about 55 people … including his father,” he said.

“He would be set up to fail his bail conditions.”

Senior Constable Herbert also said Thorpe was at “a real risk” of reoffending.

The defence called a friend of Thorpe’s who he proposed to live with if granted bail.

“I’ve known him for like ten years, he’s like a brother to me,” she told the court.

But Magistrate Maxted said he didn’t find their relationship to be “meaningful”.

The defence also told the court Thorpe would have full time employment as a bricklayer if granted bail.

The defence all called Mr Neuman to stay who claimed he could offer Mr Thorpe full-time employment as a bricklayer, however upon examination it was revealed this would likely not be the case given the nature of bricklaying.

Thorpe’s bail was denied.
