A 60-year-old Mildura man allegedly tried to stash 32 grams of methamphetamine beneath a couch cushion as police raided his Hornsey Park home, a court has heard.
Kwok Chan fronted Mildura Magistrates’ Court and pleaded not guilty to drug trafficking charges related to the police raid of his house on August 26.
The court heard that during the search of Mr Chan’s Hornsey Park property police allegedly discovered 168 grams of methamphetamine in various locations in the house and in a vehicle that was parked outside, along with $10,000 cash.
A co-accused reportedly claimed responsibility for the cash and the bulk of the drugs.
Mr Chan was charged with trafficking after officers allegedly witnessed him attempting to conceal a Ziploc bag containing 32 grams of meth beneath a couch cushion during their search of his house.
Police claimed that during his police interview, Mr Chan claimed he was told he would receive $100 per gram for selling the drug, a number that was dismissed by the prosecutor.
Prosecutor Senior Constable Matthew Hendry said the true street value of the 32 grams of methamphetamine was closer to $10,000.
Mr Chan’s lawyer Bert Hilton Wood argued his client had limited involvement, claiming the drugs had been delivered by a co-accused shortly before police arrived.
Magistrate Patrick Southey offered Mr Chan a sentence indication of six months behind bars, which was rejected by Mr Chan.
Mr Chan is next scheduled to appear in court on June 25 for a contested hearing.
