The co-accused in the alleged Cohuna tobacconist arson attack has been denied bail despite his mum offering a $10,000 surety.

Justin Carthy fronted Mildura Magistrates’ Court in an attempt to get bail on charges related to the alleged attack.

The court heard Mr Carthy and a co-accused allegedly drove six hours to Cohuna in the state’s north and firebombed a tobacconist.

Police said the accused caused more than $1m damage when they allegedly torched the shopfront and set fire to one of the stolen vehicles which destroyed the tobacconist after driving the car into the front of the shop.

Mobile phone data purportedly placed Mr Carthy’s device near the township of Cohuna around the time of the alleged arson.

The accused’s lawyer, Richard Jakobson, claimed the police evidence was circumstantial at best, particularly the mobile phone tower evidence.

“There are some issues, I suspect, with that evidence,” Mr Jakobson said.

Mr Carthy’s partner also offered up a place for him to stay while on bail, and his mother offered at $10,000 surety.

But Magistrate Michael Coghlan denied bail

Mr Carthy’s co-accused was also denied bail.

Mr Carthy is next due to appear for a committal mention on October 9 at Mildura Magistrates’ Court.
