A homeless Mildura man allegedly skipped bail, crossed into nsw, and ransacked a house, making off with over $100,000 in stolen goods.
Jessie Johnson, 20, fronted Mildura Magistrates’ Court on several charges including failure to answer bail, theft of a motor vehicle, dangerous driving and aggravated burglary.
The court heard that on August 20, Mr Johnson allegedly went to a 12,000ha property on the Silver City Highway and ransacked every room, making off with over $100,000 in stolen goods, including the property owner’s white Toyota LandCruiser.
Mr Johnson was then allegedly spotted at a gas station filling up the allegedly stolen vehicle in Wentworth.
Later he was reportedly seen by police allegedly driving erratically along Benetook Ave on the wrong side of the road.
Police found Mr Johnson at a Mildura address around 3.30pm on Tuesday.
Police said Mr Johnson allegedly made a run for it, before he was eventually arrested.
Mr Johnson appeared antsy in the dock as his bail application was heard, constantly fidgeting and muttering to himself, his lawyer, and his sister, who was in the courtroom to support him.
Mr Johnson’s lawyer, Sasha Tuliakiono, argued that he should be granted bail, citing the fact that a family member had died while in custody in Broken Hill, which was heightening his anxiety about being behind bars.
She also revealed that Mr Johnson had suffered the death of another family member just days ago and was experiencing suicidal thoughts.
It was also heard that Mr Johnson was suffering physically from cuts and bruises.
“They (the police) bashed me. Started king-hitting me when they got me on the ground. I got bruises all over,” Mr Johnson told the magistrate.
The bail application was ultimately unsuccessful, with Magistrate Michael Coghlan pointing to the fact he allegedly skipped bail to commit the purported crimes.
“He was busy, it seems, yesterday morning because he was in NSW, stealing $100k in property and that’s why he didn’t answer his bail. Bail is refused Mr Johnson,” Mr Coghlan said.
Mr Johnson put his head in his hands when he was denied bail. He will next appear in court on September 19.
