A well known meth pusher was “going along just fine” before he began taking drugs and let them “ruin” his life.
Jaron Pavis, from Mildura, was caught with a ziplock bag of methamphetamine and a syringe with meth inside on April 19 this year.
As police executed a search warrant on the 38-year-old’s home, they discovered 26g of meth, with a street value of $15,000.
Also discovered at the scene was $1060 in cash.
Pavis pleaded guilty to a multitude of charges, including possessing and trafficking methamphetamine.
The defence lawyer said Pavis was a long time Mildura local, having attended Irymple Secondary School as a teenager.
He was now raising his two children in the regional city, the lawyer said.
Magistrate Patrick Southey said drug crime like this was a newer phenomenon.
“It’s something that you never would have seen 20 years ago, middle-class people going along just fine, and then drugs come along and ruin their lives,” he said.
Putting a user of methamphetamine on a community corrections order was a “waste of time”, Mr Southey said, when a user was as “dedicated” to drugs as Pavis was.
“For people with a serious ice addiction like Mr Pavis a CCO is almost always a waste of time,” he said.
“He’s just a dedicated methylamphetamine trafficker.”
After handing down a 16-month jail sentence, Mr Southey said Pavis really needed to get his life back on track for the benefit of his wife and kids.
“This must be the thing you need to help you be the husband and father you need to be,” he said.
