Gol Gol’s Adam Thomson player slots his 100th goal of the season against Werrimull

A Gol Gol player has becomes the third player this season in Victoria to kick 100 goals in a season — and he did it against some old friends.

If ever there was an ideal day for Gol Gol’s Adam Thomson to kick his 100th goal for the season, last Saturday was it.

The Hawks coach got to celebrate the milestone with past and present teammates after getting to the milestone against Werrimull in the Millewa Football League.

The forward kicked two goals in the first quarter to reach the target before adding another nine for the match to finish with 11 majors, helping his team to a 121-point win, and cement itself in third position on the ladder heading into the final few rounds before the finals.

Thomson was surrounded by his teammates after kicking his 100th from the goalsquare.

He was also celebrated off-field by the Werrimull faithful.

For Thomson used to play for the Magpie and the club was celebrating the 10th anniversary of its 2012 premiership which the forward was a part of.

“I was playing against my old side and my brother captains the opposition team,” Thomson revealed.

“It was a little bit different doing it against my old team.”

Thomson said his brother Mark didn’t congratulate him on the ground but made sure he got to his brother after the game to talk about his milestone.

The forward has now kicked 109 for the season, one behind Bambill’s Brad Congress who leads the competition with 110.

Thomson admitted he was nervous about reaching the milestone after having the chance last week against Congress’ team.

“I had my opportunities against Bambill, kicking two goals and two behinds,” he said.

“I also had a free kick 20m out but someone played advantage and kicked a goal.

“So I have been nervous about it.

“There has also been a bit of talk about it.”

After the match, Thomson attended the reunion but did so in neutral apparel.

The previous best for Thomson in a season was 86 several ago.

The Gol Gol forward got half of his season tally in two games against Meringur, including 33 in one game, but he credits another move to helping him score the ton.

“I’ve probably played a bit closer to the goal because there was an injury to a full forward,” Thomson said.

“It’s really nice to get the milestone; when I retire it will be something I can look back on more.

“I also need to thank my teammates for looking after me this season.”

And now with the on out of the way, the goal now for Thomson is help lead the team to a premiership.
