A Melbourne-based refrigeration mechanic claims he has no memory of ploughing into a car and signage at a Hungry Jack’s in Mildura while being more than five times the blood alcohol limit, a court has heard.
Cameron Brown, 52, pleaded guilty at Mildura Magistrates’ Court after police breath-tested him following the incident, and returned a 0.275 blood alcohol reading.
Brown told the court on Tuesday he was baffled by the reading and what exactly happened.
“I have no idea how that happened. I had three drinks the night before the incident, and I was in bed by 10pm,” Brown told Magistrate Patrick Southey.
“I have no recollection of it happening. I cannot explain it,” he continued.
“It might have had something to do with your blood alcohol reading, “ Mr Southey replied.
The court heard that on February 5 at 11:30am, police were called to an incident where a white ute had collided with signage and a stationary vehicle at Hungry Jack’s on Fifteenth Street in Mildura.
Brown told Mr. Southey he had been drinking Jack Daniels the night before and remembered waking up at 6am in his hotel room on the morning of the incident.
He then told the court he fell back to sleep after getting dressed in his work clothes and mapping out his day. After that, he had no memory of the day’s events.
Despite the bizarre circumstances surrounding the incident, Brown conceded he had no choice but to plead guilty to a single charge of driving under the influence.
Mr Southey handed Brown a $693 fine and stripped him of his licence for two years.
