A Mildura teenager “decided to be a d***head” when he sped around a corner and collided with a railway bridge.
Brandon Pearce, 19, did not appear at Mildura Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday but through a lawyer gave the court permission to deal with his matters in his absence.
Police told the court Pearce was driving a white Holden Commodore on July 16 last year.
He was travelling on Hugh King Dr at 9.45pm when he made a right turn onto Madden Ave at high speed.
Pearce lost control of the car, which smashed into a railway bridge.
The incident was captured on CCTV.
A witness helped Pearce collect his belongings from the car and he returned to his home.
Police checks revealed Pearce was a learner driver and no L-plates were displayed on the car.
A preliminary breath test was conducted at Pearce’s home and due to the damage to his car, he attended Mildura Base Hospital for assessment.
But when police asked for a blood sample, Pearce refused and left the hospital.
In an August 2 interview with police, Pearce said: “I decided to be a d***head, I crashed my car.”
Magistrate Michael Coghlan fined Pearce an aggregate of $1200.
Pearce’s licence was cancelled and he will be disqualified from driving for two years.
