Alan Vallance: Ouyen landlord threatens to break tenant’s legs

Foul-mouth tirades failed to yield any money for an Ouyen landlord trying to get one of his tenants to pay up. But they did land him in court.

An Ouyen man threatened a rental property tenant he was seeking money from.
An Ouyen man threatened a rental property tenant he was seeking money from.

An Ouyen landlord said he was just trying to “scare” a tenant he was pursuing money from when he made a series of threats.

Alan Vallance, 63, appeared by audio link on Thursday at Mildura Magistrates’ Court, pleading guilty to threatening to inflict injury.

Police told the court Vallance’s son in November last year sold a rental property, where the victim resided.

Vallance, who had known the victim 15 years, went to the address to discuss outstanding rental payments.

The court was told he also rang the victim three times.

Vallance was said to have asked the victim for “the $1500 you owe me”.

He told the victim he would “knock your block off” and “knock your f--king head off”, as well as “I’ll come around and break your f--king legs”.

Vallance was arrested by police in August, telling officers he was just trying to scare the victim into paying.

The court heard Vallance had not received any money from the victim after making the threats.

Magistrate Michael Coghlan asked Vallance if he’d thought about taking the matter to the appropriate tribunal.

Vallance said he would be pursuing the matter through legal channels from now on.

A bowls club president of five years, Vallance said he realised he was in the wrong.

Mr Coghlan accepted his record of good character, but said not only did he not get the result he was after, he also ended up charged by police because of his actions.

Vallance was fined $250 without conviction.
