A work function went too far when a maintenance worker at a Mildura winery jumped behind the bar to start pouring himself drinks before tussling with police.
On June 4, Alan Turner attended Honey Bar and Rooftop in Mildura for a work function.
Staff at the bar cut him off when he appeared visibly intoxicated, however the maintenance man made his way to the closed upstairs bar and poured himself a glass of Great Northern.
It wasn’t until he’d taken a can and two more bottles of beer staff noticed what was happening, asked him to leave and called the police.
Turner refused to leave and yelled “catch me if you can” at approaching police, before running away, the Mildura Magistrates’ Court heard this week.
After a tussle which saw two police constables pin Turner to the ground in order to handcuff him, he was taken to the police station and told to sleep it off in a cell before he would be interviewed.
The next morning he told police he had no memory of the night before and had no idea how he got into the police station.
Magistrate Patrick Southey said the booze thefts were a serious offence that normally carried a term of imprisonment however this wasn’t as “cold blooded” as those matters normally were.
“The burglary is made out, but it’s pretty technical, it’s not like he cold bloodedly burgled someone’s house, ransacked and stole their possessions,” he said.
“This is hopefully and probably very out of character. He drank way more than he should have and it had fairly predictable effect.”
Turner pleaded guilty to charges of burglary and resisting arrest and was given a 12 month good behaviour bound and ordered to pay $500 to the court fund, without conviction.
