Victorian footy’s longest unbeaten and losing streaks revealed

The local footy season is well underway with some continuing on their long unbeaten streaks while nightmare runs continue for others. Here are the longest streaks in Victoria.

For some clubs, streaks are a good thing but for others it can be the stuff of nightmares.

Marong is now the leading unbeaten team in the state after Leongatha, in the Gippsland league, lost to Moe earlier this season to end their 34-match unbeaten run.

The Loddon Valley team has not lost for more than a season.

For a couple of other clubs in the state they are dreaming of just one win, as it has been years since some teams won.

Here are biggest unbeaten and losing current active streaks in Victoria.

Longest unbeaten streaks

MARONG, Loddon Valley – 31 games

Marong has the best unbeaten streak in local footy after Leongatha lost the title earlier this season. Led by goalkicking gun Brandyn Grenfell, the Panthers has been the team to beat in the Loddon Valley league for the past two seasons. The team has won all 17 games this season, adding to the 14 the team won last year to win the premiership. The Panthers play their final game of the season, a grand final against Pyramid Hill, on Saturday.

SOUTH BELGRAVE, Eastern – 25 games

Led by ex-AFL player Taylor Garner the club could be on the verge of going from bottom to top in the Eastern Football League in the space of a decade. They’ve won their first 19 games this season, including the first final, after winning their last six in 2022 to claim the Division 2 premiership. South Belgrave will play in the grand final this Saturday. The team is now in Division 1 after claiming the Division 3 and Division 4 titles in 2019 and 2013 respectively.

HARCOURT, Maryborough Castlemaine – 25 games

The side has been the benchmark in the Maryborough Castlemaine league, winning their first 17 games this season and eight last year including the grand final win against Carisbrook. The side will play in the preliminary final this Saturday against Trentham.

KERANG, Central Murray – 18 games

The reigning premiers in the Central Murray league keep on winning despite facing significant challenges this season. The streak is at 18 after winning all 16 games this regular season and two wins last year, including their grand final win over Cohuna.

KEILOR, Essendon District – 18 games

Led by former Collingwood and Carlton player Mick McGuane, the powerhouse of the Essendon District Premier Division has returned to the top in style. The team, who has 12 premierships, has won all 18 games this season and scored 100 points in all but three games this season. The Blues have the best defence and attack in the competition and will be tough to beat this year.

NORTH BRUNSWICH, VAFA – 18 and a draw

The Division 4 VAFA team has been the team to beat this season, winning all but one match, which was a draw against Box Hill. The team is on track for a perfect season and promotion to Division 3. The team beat Box Hill last weekend to make the grand final in two Saturday’s time.

TRARALGON TYERS UNITED, North Gippsland – 17 games

Last year’s grand finalists in the North Gippsland league are the team to beat this season. The team has won all 17 games, including the first final, to make this year’s grand final. The Bombers play Woodside in the decider this Saturday.

HARROW BALMORAL, Horsham – 17 games

The Kangaroos have one of the largest percentages in country footy, dominating the Horsham league. The team won 16 games in the regular season before winning their first final against Jeparit Rainbow. Team will play in the grand final this week against the Storm.

ST BERNARDS, VAFA – 17

The Snowdogs are unbeaten in Premier B and are on track to be promoted to the top division. The team has averaged 100 points a game and will play its final regular season game this weekend.

SEA LAKE NANDALY, North Central – 17

The Tigers have been the best in the North Central league, winning all 17 games this season. Led by former AFL player Josh Jenkins the team has averaged more than 100 points a game.

NEWBOROUGH, Mid Gippsland – 16 and a draw

Last year’s grand finalists have been the team to beat all season. The team has won all their games, minus one, which was a draw against Foster. The team will play in the grand final in two Saturday’s time.

Longest losing streaks

WESTERN RAMS, Riddell District — 69 games

It’s been a difficult time for the Rams who lasted tasted success when they beat Broadford, who have since moved onto the Outer East competition, by 41 points in 2018. The club has also undergone a name change since then having previously been known as Rockbank. The team has lost all 16 games this season to sit at 69 games without a win.

PORTARLINGTON, Bellarine — 68 games

The Bellarine club has struggled in recent seasons and most recently won on July 28, 2018. The club this season has lost all 18 games but got close in the first game of the season to breaking their drought with a 21-point loss to Newcomb.

MARYBOROUGH, Bendigo – 46 games

The Magpies losing run could continue for a while. The Pies have not won since beating Castlemaine on April 17, 2021. The team has lost all 18 games this season.

LALOR, Northern – 42 games

The team has almost ended their streak twice this season, losing by one point to Reservoir and by three points to Fitzroy Stars during the year. The team hasn’t won since beating Reservoir on May 1, 2021, in the Covid impacted year. Lalor has since gone on to lose every game in 2022 and has lost all 16 matches this season.

NILMA DARNUM, Ellinbank and District — 39 games

The Bombers have been unlucky this season to not end the streak. First against Lang Lang and then against Catani when Nathan Buckley came to play as part of the Carlton Draft. Their last win came on June 26, 2021 against Poowong.

WAHGUNYAH, Tallangatta – 39 games

The side last won in the Tallangatta competition on June 19, 2021, beating Beechworth who have since gone on to rise up the ladder in the competition. It might be a while before the Lions do the same after struggling so far this season. The team has lost 18 straight matches this year.

NORTH SUNSHINE, Western Region — 37 games

The Roadrunners have been battling away for the past couple of years of Division 3 of the Western Region league but have been embarking on a fresh rebuild this season.

RUMBALARA, Murray — 37 games

Rumba continues to fight on despite questions being raised about their future. The side lost all 18 games in the Murray league to be winless for the past two seasons.

GORMANDALE, North Gippsland – 30 games

The Tigers have not won since round one last year and have lost all 16 matches this season. It was a long season for the North Gippsland team.

WESTERNS, South West – 27 games

The streak almost came to an end recently but the Kangaroos fell short against Heywood by 17 points. Westerns have not won since May 7 last year against Heathmere. The Kangaroos have lost all 16 games this season.

CARAMUT, Mininera – 24 games

It’s been a tough two seasons for the Swans with no wins this season in 15 matches and only one win last season against Moyston Willaura. Caramut is currently on a 24-game winless streak after losing their last nine matches in 2022.

LAHARUM, Horsham – 23 games

The Demons have lost 23 games in a row including 16 this season to be bottom of the Horsham league. There have been signs the team can end their run, including close losses to Taylors Lake and Kaniva Leeor United, but no win yet. Team last won against Pimpinio in round 9, 2022.

MELTON SOUTH, Ballarat – 21 games

It’s been a tough season for the Panthers in the Ballarat league, losing all 16 matches. In all but one match the team has lost by more than 100 points and the other loss was a 98-point defeat. The team is winless in 23 games after losing their last seven matches last season.

CLAYTON, Southern – 22 games

The Southern league club has lost 22 on the trot, including the last four games of last season. They finished bottom of Division 3 this season.

APOLLO BAY, Colac – 21 games

The team almost ended their run in the final game of the season, losing by three points to Western Eagles. The Hawks lost all 18 games this season and currently have a streak of 21 losses after ending last season with three losses.

OLD COLLEGIANS, Warrnambool – 21 games

It’s been a tough season for the Warriors, losing all 18 games including 11 by more than 100 points. The streak sits at 21 after the team lost their last three games in 2022.

WHITTLESEA, Northern – 20 games

The Eagles haven’t won since July last year and lost all 18 games in Division 1 of the Northern league this season. It means they’ve been relegated to the second tier.

CAMPBELLS CREEK, Maryborough Castlemaine – 20 games

It’s been a tough season for the Magpies, going winless in 16 games to add to the team losing their last four in 2022. The team has almost conceded 200 points a game and has scored under 20 points in 12 games.

ST ARNAUD, North Central – 19 games

The Saints have struggled all year, conceding more than 100 points a game in the North Central league. The team has lost all 16 games this season to add to the final three games the team lost last year.

HILL END, Mid Gippsland – 19 games

It’s been a big fall for last year’s finalists, losing all games this season in the Mid Gippsland league. The team has been competitive in most matches this season but hasn’t saluted. This includes two close losses to Boolarra and Toora.

LILYDALE, Eastern – 19 games

Lost its last game of the 2022 season and didn’t pick up the four points this year which has resulted in relegation back to Division 2 of the Eastern league.

KOONDROOK BARHAM, Central Murray – 17 games

The River Raiders have been close to winning this season but ended up winless in the Central Murray league. The team lost 16 games this season to add to the one game the team lost late last year.

EAST SUNBURY, Essendon – 16 games

After sitting out the 2022 EDFL season, the Thunder returned to the field this year and weren’t able to taste success. They did however win their last game in the final round of 2021.
