A violent thug who was let inside a woman’s apartment after telling her he was feeling ‘anxious’ ended up repeatedly raping and sexually assaulting her.

The 18-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was sentenced to eight-and-a-half years in jail when he appeared for sentencing in the County Court at Melbourne on Wednesday.

He pleaded guilty to two charges of rape, two of reckless conduct endangering life, one of attempted rape, and another of sexual assault.

The offences were committed on the evening of May 30, 2023 after the man had consumed a large quantity of Jim Beam bourbon before he knocked on the victim’s door.

Judge Duncan Allen said when she opened the door, the man said he was feeling anxious and she then invited him inside as a matter of kindness to provide support.

The man sat on a couch and began talking but he wasn’t making any sense to her. He was asked to leave immediately after he committed a lewd act and said that he loved her.

Judge Allen said instead of leaving, the man grabbed the victim around the neck, threw her on to the floor, choked her and made her feel light-headed.

He also sat on her and strangled her to the point she couldn’t breathe before sexually assaulting her.

Judge Allen said the man was significantly affected by drugs and alcohol — a common feature of his life that was marred by deprivation and disadvantage.

He said the victim impact statement was the most powerful he had read for some years and described the profound impact the horrendous offending has had on her emotionally, physically, mentally and socially.

However, Judge Allen said the victim was a woman of immense courage and resilience and was trying her best to get on with life.

He fixed a non parole period of four years and six months.
