A Melbourne warehouse assistant called a semiconscious woman “sexy” at a karaoke bar before raping her in a house, a court has heard.
Sophoan Sao, 39, pleaded guilty in the County Court on Monday to one charge of rape that took place in a Melbourne house in December 2020.
Court documents stated that at a brewery where Sao and others were drinking, he was heard asking the victim whether she was married, that he liked her, and he spoke about courtship.
The group then moved to a karaoke bar just before 11pm where the victim began slurring her speech and closing her eyes.
Sao was seen hugging her, touching her shoulder and holding her hand.
An Uber was called for the victim to go home and Sao insisted he would drop her home despite being told not to by other patrons.
After arriving at her destination, Sao led her to a bed and said he was going to remove her pants so she could sleep better as they were too tight.
She didn’t remember much from the night, except that she could hear the dogs barking and Sao saying she was “sexy” and asking her when was the last time she had sex.
Sao told police he was drunk and did not recall the conversations he had with people at the bar and woke up the next morning on a driveway.
When he got home, Sao told police he slept for most of that day and was sick for three to four days due to alcohol poisoning.
He said he could not do anything “bad” because he had a partner and kids.
Sao will be sentenced on August 21.
