Popular comedian Samantha Andrew, who is set to star at this month’s Melbourne International Comedy Festival, has opened up about what helped her find fame on social media platform, TikTok.
After starting an account during the height of Melbourne’s COVID-19 lockdown, Andrew soon built up a profile which as of today has a whopping 154,000 followers and more than six million likes.
TIKTOK TIPS
★ Find your audience
★ Put a unique spin on existing trends
★ If you like something, it’s likely someone else does too
★ Have fun with it
In an interview with The Melbourne City News she said originality was key for those wanting to find success on TikTok.
An example of this is No Hat, No Play — a satirical cabaret show Andrew created alongside Mel O’Brien.
The show, which captures the best and most cringeworthy moments in Australian primary schools during the early 2000s, is set to feature at this month’s Melbourne International Comedy Festival.
“(No Hat, No Play) is very silly and high energy, we describe it as a jam packed, glad wrapped cabaret adventure with all original music,” Andrew said.
“We wanted to explore all the different people you probably would have met at primary school in the early 2000s.
“(On TikTok) you’ve got to try and do something, or if you are going to do the same as someone else, think about how you are going to put your own spin on it.
“When a lot of people think of the word ‘TikTok’, especially people who are older, (baby) boomers, Gen X, they (think) it’s just 18-year-olds dancing to viral songs, but it’s so much more than that.”
The Melbourne International Comedy Festival will return this year for a month full of hilarious gags, which are guaranteed to have you grinning from ear to ear.
This year’s festival will run from March 24 to April 18 after last year’s event was cancelled due to COVID-19.
More than 300 shows are on the cards this year for Melburnians to enjoy, see our guide here.
