A Melbourne lawyer accused of sexually assaulting a young woman outside a city kebab store has engaged the services of a top QC in a bid to clear his name.

Glenn Thexton, 42, was represented at the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Thursday by top barrister Dermot Dann, QC.

Thexton, who was charged with a single count of sexual assault, strenuously denies touching a young woman outside the late-night King St kebab store on September 25, 2019.

CCTV footage played at an earlier court hearing showed Thexton make a brief interaction with a group of young people just before he entered the kebab store.

The footage showed Thexton reach out to a young woman’s face but she pulled her head away before backing away to the other young people.

Thexton, of Albert Park, made another interaction with the group after leaving the kebab store and prior to entering a neighbouring building, according to the CCTV footage.

Police allege Mr Thexton intentionally touched the young woman on the buttocks.

Thexton, who initially represented himself, told the court in February last year that the alleged victim initially claimed he touched her thigh then it was a “five-second grab of the buttocks”.

Thexton said he believed there was no basis for the charge and had expected it to be withdrawn.

“I am simply walking down some stairs,” Mr Thexton said.

“I have walked off and was not aware any contact was made.”

Thexton also told the court a police officer told him that the prosecution case was not “seen to be a vendetta” towards the accused lawyer.

Thexton said he requested CCTV footage from the police station for when the alleged conversation took place but was told the footage had been “written over”.

Thexton also said it was “inappropriate” that the Age published a Crime Stoppers released photograph of him after police knew who they were looking for.

Mr Dann indicated his client would oppose a court order to have him placed on bail.

The court will hear submissions regarding bail later today.

Thexton has been ordered to front a two-day committal commencing on September 5 this year.
