Makmur Enterprises Pty Ltd: Golden Wok producer fined after worker injured

A Melbourne dim sim producer, whose products can be found in most supermarkets, has copped a massive fine after “fragrantly ignoring” safety measures.

A Melbourne dim sim manufacturer has copped a $30,000 fine after a worker injured his finger in a mechanical mixer.

Makmur Enterprises Pty Ltd, which produces brands including Homai, Golden Wok, Emperor and Asia Delight, appeared before the Collingwood Neighbourhood Justice Centre on Wednesday.

The company was convicted on a charge of failing to maintain plant safety after a labour hire worker was injured in May 2020.

The court heard dough commonly became stuck in a dim sim machine at the company’s Richmond factory, leading the male worker to injure his finger.

The company was charged after an investigation by WorkSafe found the machine was missing guards to control the risk of entanglement or crush injuries and safety interlock devices were inactive.

WorkSafe executive health and safety director Narelle Beer said the company had a history of “flouting workplace safety laws”.

“Makmur Enterprises has been prosecuted by WorkSafe on three other occasions following injuries caused by machine entanglements, with previous fines totalling $145,000,” she said.

“The company has flagrantly put its workers at risk of harm by ignoring basic safety measures.”

According to the company’s website, Makmur Enterprises has been a family-owned business for more than 40 years and has collaborated on products with former Australian Masterchef 2017 winner Diana Chan.
