Live gigs return to Melbourne: Baker Boy, Adalita, Banoffee

The CBD music scene is heating up for summer, with the launch of a jam-packed Melbourne Music Week line-up. See who’s playing.

Rock on Melbourne, live music is returning next week with a summer program of more than 330 artists playing in locations across the city.

Melbourne Music Week (MMW) today dropped a stellar line-up of local talent only performing from December 9 until February 28.

Headline acts include hip hop artist Baker Boy who will perform at the Melbourne Recital Centre and rock musician Adalita being commissioned for a special show on the Gran Organ at the Melbourne Town Hall.

City of Melbourne Lord Mayor Sally Capp said the live music capital is thrilled to welcome back fans.

“Live music is a critical part of Melbourne’s night-time economy and it usually generates $1.7 billion each year for Victoria and supports over 42,000 jobs,” she said.

“Melbourne is the Live Music Capital of the World and the sector was hit hard by COVID-19 so we’re excited to bring music back to the city with a 100 per cent local line-up.

“We’re proud to be bringing live music back to your favourite bars, clubs and pubs.

“We’re working closely with venues to make sure we can welcome music fans back safely and keep musicians, promoters, and hospitality workers in jobs.”

The Forum will host post-punk trio Cable Ties as the debut event followed by blistering mental band High Tension.

Much loved venues across the city won’t be left out as Colour, Cherry Bar, Curtin and Section 8 among the 35 city locations chosen for live programming.

Section 8 will take over surrounding laneways across four nights of live music and projections in a free, seated show.

ARTISTS ANNOUNCED: Adalita, Allara, Andras, Ara Koufax, Baker Boy, Banoffee, Barney McAll, Big Words, Bumpy, Cable Ties, Chiara Kickdrum, CLAMM, Close Counters, CS + Kreme, GODTET, Henry Wagons, High Tension, IJALE, Jonnine, Jordan Dennis, Katie Pearson, Mick Harvey, Private Function, Rings Around Saturn, Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever, Simona Castricum, Sleep D, The Merindas and more to come in January.

There will be a mix of performances live inside a venue and outdoors with some additionally streamed online for home audiences.

Unfortunately dancing might not be in the works for Melbourne just yet with the majority of shows in seated venues.

Other events in the extended summer program include techno bingo, vogue dance workshop, a BYO dog wellbeing series with Henry Wagons and tai chi classes.

A venue limit will be put in place to keep gigs COVID-safe with fans urged to buy tickets quickly.
