A truck has brought down several tram lines in Carlton causing major delays and road chaos on surrounding street.
Both Princes St and Lygon St will remain closed for the next two to three hours while debris is removed and the tram lines are repairs.
Drivers have been told to avoid the area which is facing long delays on all surrounding roads including Brunswick Rd, Victoria Parade and Johnston St.
The closure has also had a domino effect on Swanston, Elgin and Rathdown streets with Route 1 and 6 trams being diverted between RMIT University and Moreland Rd.
Police are investigating the incident after the truck drove through the busy intersection and a piece of machinery of the back clipped the tram line.
The incident left surrounding tram lines pulled down and several nearby cars damaged.
Police believe the driver continued on route and might not be aware of what happened.
Police are searching for driver in question.
