Docklands Primary School has opened with the first students starting classes on campus on Friday after years of planning.

Located on Footscray Rd the three-storey building was officially opened by Premier Daniel Andrews and Education Minister James Merlino, who welcomed more than 500 students, including 110 Preps, on their first day.

“The first day of school is a big day every year — but particularly after the year we had in 2020,” Mr Andrews said.

“I thank every teacher, student and parent for their efforts last year and wish them well for the year ahead.

“We’re building new schools across the state so every child has a great local school and a best start in life — wherever they live.”

Docklands Primary School is one of 14 new schools which opened today as part of the State Government’s school building plan which includes a kindergarten to be built on-site or next door to help parents with drop-off schedules.

The Docklands kindergarten will open during Term 1 and will have room for 66 children for three and four-year-old programs.

The primary school received $19.9 million in funding from the 2016-17 and 2018-19 state Budget and is complete with library, music and arts rooms, outdoor learning terraces and a competition-grade indoor sports court.

Adam Bright has been named the first principal of the school and said he hoped Docklands Primary School helped grow the community.

“I’m really excited for our community in Docklands now they have a local school, the response from families is that they live in the Docklands and there children can finally go to school here. Families can unite around the school and community,” he said.

“It’s something they have been longing for.”

Enrolments are open with parents told to visit the school’s website or Facebook page to express interest.
