Car erupts in flames, South Melbourne

Peak hour traffic has been made worse after a car engulfed in flames made for a drive by spectacle. SEE THE VIDEO

A Melbourne driver has been lucky to escape a terrifying fire after the car they were driving erupted into flames.

Emergency services received several calls after a small car pulled over when the driver became aware of a possible fuel leak about 6pm.

The footage, captured by a local resident, sees the car erupt in flames before fire crews arrive to put it out on Park St near Moray St.

Several concerned residents in the nearby apartment towers spotted the flames from above and called police.

Police arrived at the scene to assist with traffic control and have remained on Park St while the debris is cleared.

Fire crews have found a fuel leak was the cause of the fire, but it is unknown how the tank was punctured.

The fire is not being treated as suspicious.
